Plastic Surgery During Pregnancy--Is it Safe?

During pregnancy, a woman’s body nearly always undergoes drastic changes. Everything from weight gain to stretch marks can make a woman feel uncomfortable or ugly in her own body. As a result of these feelings, she may consider a breast reduction, liposuction, or any other cosmetic surgery treatment. These and most Lubbock plastic surgery procedures are more than likely elective surgeries. And general medical consensus is that all elective surgeries should be postponed until after the birth of the child.

Before performing plastic surgery, Lubbock surgeons will perform blood work and test for pregnancy. Protecting the health of the unborn fetus is of utmost importance, and while most Lubbock plastic surgery has relatively low risks, there are still risks. And there are also additional risks directly for the child that you should be aware of as you understand the impact of surgery while pregnant.

What are the risks:

Your baby has a direct connection to your body. So any injection could reach your child and have harmful effects. Pain medication and medications to prevent infection taken after the surgery will also reach your baby and often times those medications could be harmful for the child. Your immune system is often weakened by pregnancy, and your surgical recovery could be complicated. Undergoing plastic surgery, Lubbock surgeons know, can be traumatic on the body, and for the safety of both the child and the mother should be avoided if possible while pregnant.

Is anything safe while pregnant:

While it can’t necessarily be termed “safe,” emergency procedures are sometimes unavoidable. When the mother’s life is at risk in Lubbock, plastic surgery will be permissible. Occasionally topical work can be permissible. And a c-section for delivery is allowed as the medications taken by the mother after the surgery are no longer flowing directly through the bloodstream to the baby.

If you’re thinking of that breast reduction or some other plastic surgery, the surgeons at Rowley Plastic Surgery will take care of you after your pregnancy. But for now, it’s probably best to embrace your pregnant body or try feeling more comfortable or beautiful by going out and purchasing a new outfit.
